AP Top 25 Week 6: Missouri's 11-Place Leap, Florida's Fall and the Jerseys Behind the Poll

Last updated: October 5, 2026 · By Pro Sports Kit · All jersey prices verified against live store inventory.

Missouri spent one week ranked 25th and used it to beat the No. 8 team in the country by 28 points. The new AP Top 25 puts the Tigers 14th, drops Florida to 16th, and keeps Texas at No. 1 for a fourth straight week.

This is the poll that rewards statements and punishes them in equal measure. Missouri's 45-17 win was the second-biggest jump of the season; Florida's afternoon in Columbia was the second-biggest fall. In between, Alabama swapped places with Indiana, Pittsburgh arrived for the first time this season, and the SEC put nine teams in the top 25.

The short version
  • No. 1 stays put: Texas (4-0) took 61 of 70 first-place votes, its longest run at the top since 1977. Georgia got six, Miami two, Indiana one.
  • Biggest leap: Missouri, up 11 places to No. 14 after a 45-17 rout of Florida — 560 yards of offense and a nine-game losing streak against ranked teams ended.
  • Biggest fall: Florida, down eight to No. 16, a week after reaching its highest ranking since 2020.
  • New entry: Pittsburgh at No. 25, 5-0 — but without quarterback Mason Heintschel, who tore an ACL on Friday.

The movement

The five movements that matter

Missouri turned one afternoon into eleven places

The Tigers were ranked 25th and playing the No. 8 team. They finished with 560 yards, a 45-17 win and the second-biggest jump in the country this season. Austin Simmons went 23-of-30 for 340 yards and two touchdowns, and Jamal Roberts carried 24 times for 211 yards and three scores. Florida's star running back Jadan Baugh was held to 13 yards on 12 carries. It was Missouri's first win over a ranked opponent in nine attempts, and their highest ranking since October 2025.

Florida's top-10 stay lasted exactly one week

The Gators climbed from 21st to 8th a week ago — their highest ranking since 2020 — on the back of a 52-28 win over Mississippi. They leave the top ten having scored 17 points in Columbia, and they get South Carolina at home on Saturday before the schedule gets harder.

Our read

The gap between Week 5 Florida and Week 6 Florida is the whole argument against reading too much into any single Saturday. What the poll is really telling you is that the SEC has nine ranked teams and only one of them is unbeaten against the spread of the top ten — Texas, which has not played since 26 September.

Texas holds No. 1 without playing

The Longhorns were idle and still took 61 of 70 first-place votes, the fourth straight week at No. 1 — their longest run at the top since a six-week stretch in 1977. It gets tested on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl, where Oklahoma (2-2) is waiting in the Red River Rivalry. Texas has the 11th-best scoring defence in the country at 13.3 points a game; Oklahoma's defence is fifth in total yards allowed and second in the red zone.

Pittsburgh arrives without its quarterback

The Panthers are 5-0 for the second time in three seasons and ranked for the first time since last November after holding off Virginia Tech 35-33. The problem is that quarterback Mason Heintschel tore an ACL in that game and is out for the season. Kentucky, 24th last week, dropped out but is the highest-voted unranked team — two points behind Pittsburgh.

Alabama has scored 45 points in every game

The Crimson Tide swapped places with Indiana and sit sixth. Their 56-23 win at Mississippi State made them the first FBS team since Oklahoma in 2019 to score 45 or more in each of their first five games, and they are averaging 50 a game. Keelon Russell went 16-of-22 for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Saturday brings Georgia to Tuscaloosa.

Jerseys

The jerseys behind the poll

Every team in the top 20 is on the shelf. These are eight we would pick two weeks into October — the risers, the No. 1, and the two programs whose game this Saturday decides the SEC.
