Group A1: Belgium Set the Early Pace

Belgium were the story of the opening round: a 2-0 win in Rome in Mark van Bommel's first match in charge, built on a Kevin De Bruyne pass for Mika Godts' opener and sealed by Dodi Lukebakio's solo strike - Belgium's first Nations League win over Italy. France also won, 1-0 in Turkiye on Zinedine Zidane's debut, but the night cost them their captain: Kylian Mbappe injured his left knee scoring his 67th international goal and has returned to Real Madrid. He misses the rest of this window.

Matchday 2 verdict: France stole the Brussels summit 1-0 - substitute Michael Olise's slaloming solo strike on 88 minutes made it two wins from two for Zinedine Zidane, even without the injured Kylian Mbappe. In Bursa, Italy got their campaign going with a 4-1 rout of Turkiye: Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi and debutant Michael Kayode scored inside 27 minutes, and Pio Esposito's header answered Baris Alper Yilmaz's reply. France lead on six; Belgium hold second on the head-to-head - that 2-0 in Rome the tiebreaker with the pair level on points and goal difference - and Turkiye are bottom with none. Next up (Friday 2 October): France vs Italy at the Stade de France, Belgium vs Turkiye in Liege. On our shelf the group is four for four: the De Bruyne home print leads Belgium's rack, Camavinga fronts a young France line, Barella carries Italy, and Turkiye's home shirt rounds it out.

Group A2: Greece Steal the Headlines

The dugout duel everyone circled ended all square: Jurgen Klopp's first game as Germany coach and Xavi's first as Netherlands coach finished 1-1 in Amsterdam, Felix Nmecha's first-half opener answered by Cody Gakpo's acrobatic 91st-minute volley. The real drama was in Belgrade, where Greece came from behind to beat Serbia 2-1 - Christos Tzolis levelling on 73 minutes before Anastasios Douvikas won it in the 94th. Greece, only promoted via the play-offs, top the group after beating Germany 1-0 in Augsburg.

Matchday 2 verdict: Greece did it again. Dimitris Kourbelis' deflected 74th-minute strike beat Germany 1-0 in Augsburg - the Greeks' first-ever win over Germany - and spoiled Jurgen Klopp's home debut. In Belgrade, Mexx Meerdink scored twice, a 30th-minute penalty and a crisp 69th-minute finish, as the Netherlands beat Serbia 2-1 for Xavi's first win as coach; Cody Gakpo went off early with an ankle knock. Greece top the group with a perfect six points. Next up (Thursday 1 October): Germany vs Serbia and Greece vs Netherlands. Honest shelf note: Serbia is one of our two empty racks, and we say so plainly; Germany, Netherlands and Greece are all stocked, Our full report on Greece's first-ever win over Germany is worth your time. Led by Musiala's home jersey and Depay's away.

Group A3: The Group of the Round Delivers

The hardest section on paper produced the best football of the round. Spain came from 2-1 down to beat England 3-2 at Wembley - Lamine Yamal scoring inside two minutes, substitutes Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal completing the comeback after Harry Kane's penalty hit the bar (read our full match report). In Prague, Croatia won 2-1 on Slaven Bilic's return as coach: Luka Modric powered the opener, Adam Karabec levelled, Marco Pasalic headed the winner.

Matchday 2 verdict: Lamine Yamal needed barely a minute to set the tone in Seville - scoring on 2 minutes and again on 63, with Marc Pubill and Nico Williams also on target - as Spain beat Croatia 4-1 in a rematch of the 2025 final to reach 40 games unbeaten; Dion Drena Beljo's first-half header was as good as it got for Slaven Bilic's side. In Prague, England ground out a 2-0 over 10-man Czechia: Pavel Sulc's 25th-minute red card opened the door, and Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane walked through it after the break. Spain lead on six; England edge Croatia to second on goal difference with the pair level on three points - and they meet in Zagreb on Saturday - while Czechia are bottom with none. Next up (Saturday 3 October): Croatia vs England and Spain vs Czechia. The shelf angle: Yamal's two-star away jersey stays the pick of the window, joined by Saka's home print, Croatia's home shirt and Czechia's red.

Group A4: Haaland vs the Holders

Erling Haaland scored twice - his 63rd and 64th Norway goals in 56 caps - as Norway edged Denmark 3-2 in an Oslo thriller that had a 2-0 lead, a 2-2 scare and a 73rd-minute winner. Holders Portugal began the Jorge Jesus era with a professional 1-0 over Wales (Joao Felix, 21 minutes), then won 2-1 in Oslo with Ronaldo left on the bench. On Sunday night the two winners met in Oslo and Portugal won again: Joao Felix struck on 17 minutes, Erling Haaland levelled early in the second half with his 65th Norway goal, and Goncalo Ramos' chip three minutes later settled it 2-1 - Cristiano Ronaldo an unused substitute.

Matchday 2 verdict: Denmark collected their first points, beating Wales 2-0 in Copenhagen - a Ben Davies own goal and Gustav Isaksen's strike, both created by Mikkel Damsgaard - leaving Wales bottom with no points and no goals. Portugal lead on six; Norway hold second on the head-to-head - that 3-2 Oslo thriller the tiebreaker with the pair level on points. Next up (Thursday 1 October): Denmark vs Portugal and Wales vs Norway. Denmark are our other empty rack - stated plainly - but the group's three stocked shelves are heavyweights: Ronaldo's number 7, Haaland's home print and the Wales home shirt.
