Week 5 left three teams unbeaten, three teams winless and an NFC East that did not win a single game. Jacksonville beat Philadelphia 19-17 in London on a 57-yard kick as time expired, Baltimore won 30-23 in overtime with its backup quarterback, Buffalo closed the week with a 37-34 overtime win at the Rams, and the Chargers, Titans and Dolphins are all 0-5.

The wildest finish was in London, where Cam Little kicked a 57-yard field goal as time expired after Ameer Abdullah had returned the kickoff 53 yards with eight seconds left. Baltimore's drama moved to Atlanta, where Tyler Huntley led a late comeback and an overtime win with Lamar Jackson still out. And the Giants and Commanders tied 27-27 at Northwest Stadium, which left the NFC East without a win on the week.

The short version
  • Still unbeaten: San Francisco and Minnesota are 5-0 after wins, and Kansas City is 4-0 because its bye fell in Week 5.
  • Lamar Jackson: out again with the ankle injury, and the Ravens still won 30-23 in overtime at Atlanta on Tyler Huntley's 1-yard run.
  • The Chargers are 0-5 after losing 23-17 to Denver at SoFi Stadium. Only the 1992 Chargers have reached the playoffs from 0-4.
  • Week 5 closed with Buffalo beating the Los Angeles Rams 37-34 in overtime at SoFi Stadium, and the London game went to Jacksonville, 19-17.

Story one

Kansas City is 4-0, and it was not comfortable

The Chiefs went to Las Vegas as one of two unbeaten teams in the AFC West and left with a 30-27 win that Patrick Mahomes described the way he describes most of them: messy, and enough. He threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, and he is now 6-0 in his career at Allegiant Stadium.

The game turned on Kenneth Walker III, who ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns — including a 76-yard burst at the end of the third quarter that Next Gen Stats clocked at 21.21 mph before Taron Johnson chased him down at the eight. Two plays later Mahomes found Tyquan Thornton, who finished with five catches for 111 yards and two scores and was carted off with an ankle injury on the play that set up the go-ahead touchdown.

Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns for the Raiders — ending a seven-game winning streak that stretched back to last season in Atlanta — but Las Vegas ran for 72 yards at 2.8 a carry. Andy Reid now has more wins at Allegiant Stadium than any coach, seven, breaking a tie with two former Raiders head coaches.

Our read

Kansas City's four wins have come by 3, 7, 6 and 3 points. That is not a team winning comfortably; it is a team winning the last ten minutes every week. The bye fell in Week 5, so the Chiefs are still 4-0 and still unbeaten, and the Chargers — now 0-5 — come to Arrowhead on 18 October.

Story two

The Lamar Jackson question

Jackson's first half was the best half any quarterback has played this season: 15-of-20 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, plus 20 yards on the ground. Then, on the Ravens' final drive before halftime, Jermaine Johnson II sacked him and landed on his left ankle. He was taped up on the sideline. He did not take another snap.

Tyler Huntley finished the game — 8-of-9 for 63 yards — and Baltimore scored nothing in the second half. It didn't matter, because the first half had already produced a 24-7 lead: Derrick Henry's 5-yard touchdown against the team he spent nine seasons with, a 19-yard scoring pass to Zay Flowers, and a 64-yard field goal by Tyler Loop on the last play of the half. Tennessee's two first-half turnovers turned into ten Baltimore points, and a fourth-and-goal stop by Nnamdi Madubuike from the 2-yard line protected the lead into the fourth quarter.

Cam Ward threw for 222 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Tennessee, and Carnell Tate had nine catches for 145 yards in the best game of his career. The Titans are 0-4 for the second straight season, and they then lost 26-3 at Houston on 11 October to fall to 0-5.

Jackson did not play the next week either. Huntley started at Atlanta on Sunday 11 October, completed 24 of 32 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, ran in the winner from a yard out in overtime and watched Kyle Hamilton intercept the last pass for a 30-23 Ravens win. Derrick Henry ran for 102 yards and caught an 18-yard touchdown, and Baltimore is 4-1 ahead of a trip to Cleveland in Week 6.

Story three

Los Angeles is 0-5 and the numbers are ugly

The Chargers lost 30-23 in Seattle on 4 October and 23-17 to Denver at SoFi Stadium on 11 October, so they are 0-5 and have allowed 24 or more points in four of their five games. Justin Herbert threw for 189 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions against the Seahawks — he has six interceptions in five games — and was sacked four times for 35 yards. Seattle's opening drive started with an interception; so did Los Angeles', which is the first time since at least 1991 that both teams in a game threw a pick on their first offensive play.

Emanuel Wilson, pushed into a bigger role when rookie Jadarian Price went on injured reserve, ran for 81 yards and scored twice. Sam Darnold threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns for the defending champions, who moved to 3-1 with that win and are 3-2 after losing 32-29 to San Francisco on 11 October. Seattle also committed 14 penalties for 150 yards, a franchise record, and won anyway. Only one team in NFL history has reached the playoffs after starting 0-4: the 1992 Chargers, who were also the Chargers. Los Angeles now has to make that history from 0-5.

Also worth knowing

Four more things the opening month told us

Washington ran out of quarterbacks in London

Already without Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left elbow, the Commanders lost backup Marcus Mariota to a right knee injury in the opening minutes in London and finished the game with rookie seventh-round pick Athan Kaliakmanis. They lost 30-13 to the Colts. Daniels was back under centre for the Week 5 game against the Giants and ran for two touchdowns, but Washington tied 27-27 after running out of time with a winning field goal in range.

San Francisco is unbeaten without being impressive

The 49ers were held to three points on seven possessions before Marvin Mims Jr. fumbled a punt return, and then scored on three straight drives to beat Denver 24-14. Brock Purdy threw two touchdowns (19-of-30, 218 yards) and has not been sacked in four games. George Kittle's 56-yard screen sealed it, and Denver lost both starting cornerbacks — including Patrick Surtain II — to injury. The 49ers then won 32-29 in Seattle on 11 October, where Mike Evans caught seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, and they are 5-0.

Josh Allen's interception was avoidable, and he said so

Buffalo lost 29-26 to New England, its first defeat at its new stadium. Allen's late heave into double coverage was picked off with under a minute left; afterwards he said he should have thrown it away. He did set a franchise record with his 88th career touchdown from scrimmage, and Keon Coleman caught six passes for 116 yards.

Charlotte got a glimpse of something

Bryce Young went 29-of-41 for 329 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and Tetairoa McMillan caught 14 passes for 192 yards in a 32-26 win over Detroit. The Lions scored one touchdown in the first 56 minutes and have now lost their last six games after a win.
