And then there's the strange one: Arsenal, the defending champions — winners of the title in May — did effectively nothing on deadline day. Their business was done early and quietly: Guimarães and Konsa in, no panic, no parade. When a champion declines to react to £117 million signings elsewhere, that is either supreme confidence or a very good poker face. The odd business was the exits: Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona for £8.6 million, Fábio Vieira to Hamburg, and teenager Ethan Nwaneri loaned to Borussia Dortmund to finish his education in front of 80,000 Germans.
